ADSL technology uses ordinary telephone connections to transfer data between the telephone exchange and the ADSL modem in your home or office. This has several advantages over other broadband technologies. Firstly, it is possible to use you existing telephone lines. In fact you can connect to an ADSL service over the same telephone line that you use for a fax or voice calls. The ADSL service will continue to function even while you are receiving faxes.

In order to prevent the ADSL signal from interfering with a fax or voice service it is necessary to install line filters. These filters are placed on all non-ADSL connections that share the same telephone line (telephone number).

Make sure you don't place a line filter between your ADSL modem and the wall socket!

Security

Remember that ADSL is an 'always on' connection to the Internet. You may wish to consider the use of firewall software or 'appliance' to help protect your computers from hacking.
