What is a 56K modem?
56K modems were developed as a hybrid technology combining the features of traditional analogue modems
with the performance of ISDN. The 56Kbps speed corresponds to the speed of a
single ISDN channel (United States of America only, Australian ISDN is 64Kbps).
56K modems use compression and encoding methods that are very different from those used in standard
33.6K analogue modems. Unlike analogue modems, 56K modems use a digital signal for transferring data
from the Internet service provider to the user.
56K modems are sensitive to many conditions that do not affect slower modems. These conditions
include the condition of phone lines, the number of switches between the user and the ISP, and
even the distance of the user from the telephone exchange.
